Out The Mouths of Babes

I am a beach bum and I'm happy my son inherited my love of the sand and sea. Maybe it's because I took him to Barbados when he was only 3.5 months old or maybe it's in his genes. I don't know, but I'm glad he likes the heat and water like I do.

We've also taken family vacations to Florida three times so far and plan to go back at Christmas. I keep a magnet and postcard of Fort Lauderdale beach up on our fridge to remind us of good times and weather. Recently, the Little Man has been demanding to see them and he points at them and says, "beach! Go now!"

One evening, we decided to talk to him more about it. He was adamant and persistent, without getting frustrated (good on him!) to get us to understand what he was saying. After a lot of jumbled, incomprehensible sentences came out of him, we broke it down from the beginning.

He said, "beach. Me happy and Dada happy."
Ok, but what about Mama? Wasn't she happy, too?
"No," he said. "Grandpa go in wawa, say 'Bye-bye!'"

Oh my goodness! I couldn't believe what came out of his mouth!

Fighting back tears, I said, "yes, you're right. We put Grandpa in the water and said 'Bye-Bye.' Mama was sad."
"Go see Grandpa!" he demanded.
"No, we can't see Grandpa. He's dead. Maybe he can see you right now, but you can't see him. You can see his picture...."
And by then he was distracted by something else.

It's just amazing because the Little Man is almost three now and he's talking about my sister and I pouring my father's ashes in the sea in Barbados when he was just 16.5 months old.

He sat on the beach and played in the sand while my hubby watched him and took pictures of the whole event.
There he is playing happily. Who would have thought his brain was busy burning this memory into his brain?
It's amazing and I'm glad he remembers this and his Grandpa.

Just goes to show, you never know what will come out the mouths of babes :)

Just Say No to Milk

just say no onequartermama
The Little Man is 29 and a half months today. I'm no longer doing "don't ask, don't refuse," I said no to nursing this morning. I can deal with being a sleepy-time pacifier, but there's no pacifying required in the morning, just habit.

Half the time his latch is off and we're almost totally dry-nursing and quite frankly, it hurts. My boobs are sore and tired. It's not how I thought it would be - that whole "I want my body back" thing people say so much. I have my body back. I don't feel like I ever lost ownership of it. My boobs are just tired and empty. (That sounds like they're depressed. Well, they've lost their reason to live!)

He cried, but I told him he was a big boy and could have a big boy treat. He said he wanted to watch TV. I presume I will have to repeat this process for weeks.

I'm not sure if it sends a mixed-message if he's allowed to nurse at nap and bed time, but I do tell him then also that he's a big boy and doesn't need to, though I don't refuse. I figure he's not developmentally ready to totally soothe himself to sleep yet and he doesn't use an artificial pacifier or suck his thumb. Even after nursing at night, he still gets passed off to Dada for rocking. There's always been something about Dada's arms - Dada has always been the master putter-to-sleeper. Though, if Dada is not around, he's fine and if I'm not around in the morning, he's fine.
People are complex.

Daddy Image

Well ladies, it's not just happening to us! You know the way the media uses predominately teenagers to model adult clothes, skewing everyone's image of what a normal woman should look like?

Well I just got an email from Joe Fresh, inviting me to check out the best ideas for Dad this Father's Day and there are some mighty young looking Dads featured.

Now I'm not saying they have to use old fogies in golf shirts, but don't these guys seem more like college frat boys to you?

Yes, of course dads can be cool! I agree. But why not get some real dads next time?

While I'm here, Happy Father's Day to all the daddies! Even the teen ones ;)
